Why do we as Indonesians need to celebrate too? Here are some of my thoughts.

While Nationalism is talked very intensely nowadays, it shocked me a little bit when the Head of School simply read the official written note from our Ministry of Youth and Sport. So, the same points will apply to the entire country with different conditions between one another. Again, isn't it too-easy-way to celebrate the day this country is always proud of? Is it to standardise or too lazy? Anyway, let's just forget it as this is just an introduction yet. :)

Here are the perspectives..
Celebration of Soempah Pemoeda is just a repeating set of routines to me while some same old things are yearly repeated again and again. One thing that can be seen very clearly is the celebration itself where so-called flag ceremony (people call it as “upacara bendera” here in Indonesia) is always conducted every year with the same agendas as well as points embedded in it. Now, the question is, is it important to have such thing?

Personally – as this is a personal website :) - I may say that that kind of routine is really wasting time and useless as things involved such as agendas and points as mentioned above are simply repeated every year. They are just rephrased to make it sound nicer and more up-to-date in terms of current form of nationalism. However, the main intention of that form of celebration never works! Come on people, we have been doing this boredom for almost 70 years but this country is still corrupted (sadly, by our own people) and left behind. People living in this country are still blindfolded by the political needs. It is true and please do not ever pretend that you are smart enough and do not ever negotiate to doubt about the previous two sentences I have spitted just now.

If repeated thing does not work good for you, why do you have to repeatedly repeat?
I really did not notice that it would come this day when I kept listening to Iwan Fals' Jangan Bicara (Don't talk) so, let's now bring Nationalism onto surface! If I have the right to rename something, I would like to rephrase Nationalism to be Obsolete Nationalism (not old, do not mis-percept about this). What is such thing anyway?

Obsolete Nationalism is generally described as an old behaviour of interpreting Nationalism. It can also mean to be an ineffective way to enjoy a classic word called Nationalism. Some real examples can be seen very clearly in the community where Nationalism is easily and/or loudly said and finally left. “Say and go away” is probably the right term to describe efficiently. We – together – have been seeing a huge number of citizens who are going to apply for work in governmental institutions (named as PNS in Indonesia). Some of them are wisely trying to argue that it is one form to dedicate themselves to this country, and some of them also seriously confess that they are purposely going for easy-money. To some people (including me), it does not end up there as there is an additional lazy-money to chase.

In real, that “special” citizens are being marched away along with siren every time they are hanging around the town and let's see couple of years from now – from today's celebration of so-called Nationalism, who will get caught and trapped in court for criminal acts they have enjoyed?

But again, will they really be in jail? :) Should I mentioned the cause(s)? I don't think so!
How should the celebration be?
Of course, it must differ! What should appear in our mind if we see musicians on street ironically scratch their guitar strings and sing to beg a cent? As stated in Iwan's song either, who's to blame if jobless becomes thief as their rice is stolen by some irresponsible people hiding behind government mask? Who's to feel ashamed?

If I have said about the Obsolete Nationalism, let me now introduce a form of Modern Nationalism! It is described as the situation previewed above where those musicians succeed to collect money cent by cent without government involvement despite the fact that they are most of the time chased and caught for some unreasonably reasons. Do not take whatever reasons into account, but please look at their independence to live themselves so that they will still exist to be Indonesian! Meanwhile, government does not seem to care about them. At least, I never see any official publication from our government about this kind of issue and please also bare in mind that this is only one example of many others!

Modern Nationalism is a way to give a sincere and straight forward meaning to Nationalism by doing things in order to enhance the quality of your own life, people around you, and your country. It must begin from yourself and is really not for the sake of this country in the very first place (as it sounds cr*ppy to me) and I do not know much if the classical so-called flag ceremony does it for you. :)

Jangan bicara runtuhnya moral.
Mari bicara tentang harga diri yang tak ada arti.
Atau tentang tanggung jawab yang dianggap sepi.
(Iwan Fals - Jangan Bicara)
Don't talk about moral failure. Let's talk about meaningless pride or responsibility that is so quite. (Translated)

This morning, Nationalism to me is to be blissful that I could enjoy the enthusiastic taste of a cup of local hot tea accompanied by Mendoan – traditional fried “tempe” - whereas it is just enough to smash my b*tt and motivate me for finishing this article up. :) Please bare the things discussed above in mind and the most important one, overcome it!

Last but not least, please underline very clearly that the purpose of this written material is not to provoke but it is expected to help opening some eyes if just in case there are still somehow blindfolded. Hope it helps curing this country! See you around! :)

Kind regards,

I Made Brian Kusumawan
an Indonesian dreamer
Remember Me
BrianKusumawan.com

New British Formula 1 World Champion 2009 from British Team! I therefore would like to bring two points into surface in order to critically analyze this issue.

Efficiency
Being efficient is always related to numbers, especially time. So, how much time do we save for not typing "www" in an URL?

Yes, it is indeed faster to type an URL with no "www" into your favourite web browser. Moreover, it's a logical thing!

Let's start critically thinking!

Effectiveness
How easy can a website be remembered without "www"?

Of course, it is much easier to memorize shorter website address(s) and it is well proven that deprecating "www" will give longer impression to its visitors as number of words or characters they need to keep in mind is lesser. In other words, human brain only spends smaller amount of memory to be used.

On the other hand, the issue does not just end up right there. How about their familiarity with the so-famous-word "www"? Some IT professionals might totally understand how Internet works so it means they are pretty sure whether or not "www" is absolutely neccessary in an URL. However, what about others? Non-IT-specialized mates out there?

What is really happening?
We have to confess that Internet is always identic to "www". That particular public thought is caused by one habit which is not completely proven to be right. But it really does happen to be right! Everytime most of us access the Internet, we begin with typing "www" followed by the website domain in the Internet browser address bar. This regular activities keep on bouncing every second, every minute, and every time!

What do we have in turn? Internet equals to "www" (Internet = "www"), and it becomes a Syndrome! In result, it affects most of Internet activities and indirectly it becomes a habit.

We cannot clearly conclude that as either good or bad habit, but it is the situation we currently have where Internet users cannot take out "www" from all of their online activities. This is where a very wise consideration of deprecating "www" needed so bad.

Idealism Vs. Realism
Yes, it is about idealism and it is about technological science as well. Internet domain (widely known as website address or URL) is only described as word(s) or phrase(s) located infront of its top-level domain (.com, .org, .net, etc). "www" is just actually to indicate that the full URL are located on the World Wide Web network, but technically means that it is a sub-domain.

Jumping to conclusion, we have to be realistic. Again, we have to bare in mind that such Syndrome as mentioned does exist! It does not leave so much pain if we probably lose our traffic just because we follow the no-www philosophy for our individual website(s) (non-profit), however, traffic means a lot when running online business(es).

How to Do Good Practice?
Good practice we need to think of is a strategy that conveys both of the followers which means that the same destination will be reached if online visitors access the webpage with or without "www". It also prevents visitors from mistakenly miss the "www" sub-domain and from a business perspective, we may say that customers are always in hand!

Another good practice is to build a good domain structure so that website visitors will be subsequently informed the clear domain structure a website has. For example that this website has http://www.briankusumawan.com as its homepage. In other words, it is the main page in where the visitors will land on. Additionally, it also has http://contactme.briankusumawan.com where "contactme" becomes a sub-domain in which visitors can find more details about contact addresses.

This hierarchical structure may also be considered as a good practice when developing a company websites that runs more than one business.
i.e.

http://www.companyname.com

http://business1.companyname.com

http://business2.companyname.com

http://business3.companyname.com

etc.

List of References

http://no-www.org/

http://yes-www.org/

http://www.answers.com/topic/top-level-domain

http://www.answers.com/topic/subdomain

Event Review 19 June 2009

Topic: Information Technology (IT) Involvement to Enhance Quantity and Quality of Academic Teaching

Promoter: Ir. It delivered some considerations why Information Technology (IT) is a significant aspect in their work field. It also introduced tools and techniques which may help enhancing their academic teaching experience.

Event Learning Goals
There were some topics picked as follows.

1. Introduction to IT
It covers three main elements in IT such as input (data), process (tools), and output (information).

2. IT-related Tools and Techniques in Academic Teaching
It specifies related tools and techniques available to be used in order to enhance teaching experience.

3. Advantages, Disadvantages, and Barriers in Implementing IT in Academic Teaching
It notifies benefits the implementors of IT may get, drawbacks, as well as some aspects that probably be the barriers of taking IT into account.

4. IT Good Practice in Academic Teaching
It includes tips and tricks to perform some IT-related tools and techniques.

Event Conclusion
The audiences participated in a well manner and there are two questions in the end.

1. Internet safety issue and downloading technique
AVG Safe Search was suggested to be the main virus detector embedded into their favourite Internet browsers to help reconfirming whether the websites they are about to visit are virus-free. What an excuse!

Did you all still remember when I once quoted that Indonesia is a state where judges judge other judges that eventually brings us to a state where Indonesians kill Indonesians? It's once again proven!

So, let's start to stop talking about so-called "Wakil Rakyat" and bla bla bla. Pictures shown in every corner of the city are just dirts to our homeland!

Why don't we start contributing a thing or two (or probably more!) straight away to our communities without having to claim that we are doing it on behalf of this country? There are two primary factors that must be questioned in regard to this issues; level of the business practitioners about the importance of having legalities still remains low OR complexity of applying the legalities to the department in charge raises. As it is widely known in public that the officers in charge usually seem unclear and/or unpredictable in terms of requirements needed. The famous custom of having illegal commission may be the significant cause either. How can a business that is about to start, not even started yet, and none can guarantee to succeed be charged with retributions here and there throughout its legality processes?

People are getting bored with this classical kind of game. If the current system used is not efficient enough, then please recheck, reconsider, and positively reform as needed. Do not even try to take it for granted as there is no excuse, the system was initially developed by human being no matter how. Otherwise, it is the result whereby we can see gorgeous buildings touching the skies that indeed have no legalities and etc. Who bother? Ombudsman? For me, this writing is about an adventure that keeps coming to me over and over again when we deal with governmental matters in the country – Indonesia.

How many of us still remembered those days when registration processes and procedures seemed so complicated especially in governmental area? Some say those days are long gone and I personally so but unfortunately, I do not completely agree with it. Several months ago, I was in a registration process of my company's legality and uncountable silly/unimportant issues showed up unbelievably. It was really such a waste of time for me so that I thought I better tried to make an excuse. Today, this morning, I was again about to apply something that involved myself and another governmental institution and similar thing happened. Frankly, I was badly forced to speak up! The time is really over, mate!

As I mentioned earlier, yes these things happened in different locations but why does the same case keep occurring again, again, and again? Where is the learning process here? Does sitting as a staff in a public service provider completely dressed with so-called professional uniform make they think they are cool enough for not doing things they are supposed to? Does the company recognize a thing named CRM? Aren't the governmental companies big enough to perform such task?

This country possesses the key to them to manage all resources owned by the country but where is the real practise of that responsibility? Let's take an example of PLN – a national company that takes care of electricity supply in Indonesia. When recently they are running out of supply, as an institution that is supposed to somehow produce and manage the electricity supply, they simply say sorry that the supply is limited and please be wise in using it. What an excuse?!? Isn't it a shame for PLN to know that an isolated village in the Central Java manages to produce the electricity supply for their own through a small generator in the river around them? If a small river can lighten a village, our country have plenty of water resources to be used. Do not say sorry so easily if professionalism is really the main priority in the business. Professionalism never says sorry, it always gives better solutions in order to satisfy its clients all the time. Therefore, if the company is really making progress and taking any action, please be quick and real. Don't laugh on small things people have done in order to produce electricity as those small things become bigger in many cases and the company still says “can't” up until now.

Back to the story about administration and transparency. From all I have been seeing in the real practise, administration processes are still complex. I do not say complexity is bad thing to implement but then being transparent may help public service sectors more realistic as customers will know better what they can expect – nothing more and nothing less. Is the transparency purposely hidden so that the company can still have a clue to shoot back their customers when they complain? There is a funny fact I have encountered when a staff pointed a manager of one of their partners to support his argument. Does inviting other party mean transparent to them? Foolishly, I do not really care who and/or what kind of manager I am talking to. As long as I found something wrong in practise, I will absolutely enquire and I think it is pretty fair.

How many of you ever realize that this kind of issue may lead into bigger problem? How many of you ever been discriminated by any other races in our country? Chinese will only making business in a conducive environment with other Chinese and so on. What's the cause of it? This might be one of them!! Regardless who and/or what our ancestors were, it is the point I used to mentioned where Indonesians eventually start killing Indonesians.

No more negotiation in maintaining public services, be wise in terms fairness is the only way to go. Open your eyes and try to think from other perspective. Open your eyes and start dreaming if dream is something that leads you to success. Last but not least, I am speaking up this way is not because my nationality is gone or whatsoever. Yes, I do not like my country to be this way and I want it other way around. In other words, I want my country to be better so I welcome any critics, supports, or any other suggestive feedbacks. Long live, Indonesia!!

“ I wanna have a same last dream again.. “ - The Adventure, Tom Delonge – Angels and Airwaves.

-
Kindest regards,

I Made Brian Kusumawan
B.Sc. We have a lot of work to do to get our country back on track, and I'll be in touch soon about what comes next.

But I want to be very clear about one thing...

All of this happened because of you.

Thank you,

Barack

First of all, I am very proud to know that he was willing to spend some time for thanking us all by writing this response as soon as he won the election. It clearly reflects that he does not forget who he was born to be the US President with and as he mentioned, he was born with us, with all of his supporters.

For me – personally, his victory might not directly affect the country I am currently living – Indonesia – where notably he has spent years to live in. However, I strongly expect that this can be a good motivation for us as a developing country. We have to take a little flashback on the history how a person like Barack Obama struggling to be what he always wanted to be. Look at him now, a boy whom once schooled in Indonesia has become President of The United States of America; the land of opportunities!

Again, I want each and everyone of you clear about a thing that by referring to his message does not mean I put other country(ies) on everything, it is just nothing more but a real example of a success. I never hate my country and I am always proud to be an Indonesian. However, my description of being “Indonesian” might be different from most of the people.

Corruption is the hugest issue in our nation recently and I think most of us admit it. I have been listening people comments about political lives in which they feel irritated and hopeless by attending campaigns or even the elections. Most of them wonder whoever they go for will produce the same result as previously and statements listed below are some of the examples:

Whoever we choose will still sit down, relax, and have fun with our money.

Whoever we choose will gain more money no matter how the way is since they have spent so much in advance to gather votes.

Whoever we choose will regenerate the parliament as their own company.

By looking at some of the issues, are we still appropriate to stand still and keep talking that way? How about making move? And this is the real “Indonesian” I want myself to be; the Indonesian who does not pay the government to foolishly smoothen your business, the Indonesian who does not keep believing the nightmare we had in the past, and the Indonesian who wants to be different in positive ways. Remember, those jerks are alive because we used to feed them with chances they could take, so simply start it from now onwards to stop giving them chance. Moreover, if you are responsible for your country, please wake up and replace them as I believe best thing will come with confidence, actions, and prayers.

As a conclusion, let's refer back to Obama's message. I do believe that life is about making history but still, we are not living alone. We therefore have to make it together and that's a thing named history if probably today or tomorrow we really make it! Please start motivating people around you, your families, mother and father, sons and daughters about how important this small-looked issue really is.

Last but not least, please always bare this in mind that we go for one thing for sure; better Indonesia!

Kindest regards,

I Made Brian Kusumawan
An ordinary kid who has been dreaming of better Indonesia.

Obama 2008: On the Way of Making History!

First of all, I wish this writing is not going to be so late as I believe that chasing Obama's pace in 2008 is pretty hard; he's indeed running forward and no looking back. This writing is expected to answer couple of questions from some friends of mine in regards to my admiration to Mr. Barack.

Perhaps, we all do not know very well when precisely Barack Obama started his debut in politic. Some might think that experience is significant point to judge whether or not someone is qualified to do something, to be called an expert, etc. On the other hand, some might look according to the age. For me, I do not bother so much on those two aspects, I do believe more in real performances shown so bare in mind that in this case I will write my view regardless when Barack Obama began his political experience. However, I will put a reference on it so that you can have a look about his complete autobiography.

Barack Obama is a newly-born form of pure idealism to me. He is the initial point where idealism is brought back into surface and he has the strong belief in it. Personally, I most of the time face bunch of people who are doing the wrong things and sadly, they are aware or even know and believe that the things they are doing are wrong. How can we tackle this issue meanwhile the globalism era is counting down the days to come? What is actually the cause of this issue? The answer is just hopelessness! That simple word has been haunting our people for so many years. It is like a wrong belief that has been being injected over generations and this is the result where we seem having nowhere to go, nothing to do, and just sit back and relax without realizing that the blue skies up there are no longer blue and are about to fall down; the world is falling down!

I quite often see people laughing when we talk about improvements. Most of our people still tease all those politicians' speakings and think pessimistically that they will take no action but money once they sit under the political crown. There are two things I want to talk about here regarding this issue. First, I also quite often to see people showing their best, knocking each other down, and arguing on something. It seems like we have a good or even talented bunch of people but by the time we have to do something, people dismiss! What do they do? What best have they debated for? Please do not tell me that it is just for the sake of making you to be the winner of every game you have gone through without figuring what the best solution(s) supposedly is, I do not like that answer! Life can sometimes be a game but moving together as a family, village, town, city, and/or country is not a game at all where we need to represent a winner! So, let's just assume if you are skillful, then why do you let all those politicians to take their intended places? Stop teasing and replace them if you feel that you are qualified enough, do not knock others' ideas just for your own satisfactions! Secondly is about dream. Being idealistic for better improvements is everyone's dream so, what is dream now? Is it some kind of shame? Something we need to laugh? And this is what happens to the people in our community; they laugh for something positive and they keep doing something negative. I know that negative stuffs probably addict ourselves very easily, it comes unintended but it does not go off intendedly. What is the motivation of being negative anyway? Aren't we capable of doing something good? Or – again – hopeless? Let's start dreaming then! For me, dreaming is not hopeless because dreaming can be a good direction of every step a person need to go. Having no dream makes you feel empty, unaware, and having no imagination about what to do and where to go. At least you think of something in your brain then you will know exactly what you need and want. But again, it does not stop there, real action is still needed to make it real. Take it back into the topic, Barack Obama is ready for this. He has a very reliable vision for being better American, for being better world in general. He had that dream and has started some actions in order to make his dreams come true. Importantly, he has shown a great understanding through a pure idealism on how to turn people from laughing to believing that better improvements are not just in our dream and are about to get real soon enough!

Before I end this writing, let me emphasize one more time that this admiration is not because Barack Obama is a US president candidate who notably has higher chance to win the election. Taking our country – Indonesia – a little bit into the topic, there is a valuable lesson we can actually pick up. If I still see some of us regretting themselves of being Indonesian or some of them want to leave the country and have no plan of returning back at all, let's just take this real example that no matter where we live but it is the matter how well we do things. Barack Obama ever spent a year or two to “taste” Indonesian education in Jakarta and look at him now, he is the US president candidate! He is about to win and significantly he is about to improve the world!

Barack Obama is just one example of history maker. He is probably not yet but he has been trying to be and that is the very huge point we have to put our respects into. As sometimes seemed, I am not here to blame anyone in our country but I am just positively compare and criticize what is actually happening in real in our country. As usual, I will be glad to hear any comments, arguments, critics, and/or others about this issue.

Kindest regards,

I Made Brian Kusumawan
B.Sc. It is claimed that I am too “western” in many cases as referred back to my education history that I have graduated from a foreign university and have spent a year or two to live abroad. The question now is, am I really “westernized”?

No, I am not “westernized” as I might look like but one big thing to remember here is that I just love an improvement; a set of processes of getting better in many ways. I have no idea whether it is said to be lucky or unlucky that concrete examples of industrialism successes happened in the so-called West countries; West is commonly assumed to be the US but I would like to call so-called West countries as it is not just about US only but European continents as well despite the fact that they are not located in the West part of the world. Back to the topic, yes, I just do love improvement(s) no matter where or when they happen. If a very sophisticated improvement is now happening in the East, then I will go for it, so is it still appropriate to name me as a “westernized” kind of person?

There might be a big question haunting in your mind then why I do love to bring globalism into our local/national issues. I do realized long time ago that every problem has its own distinct solution and so do our problems. However, being worldwide is an international trend at the moment and I think it is common thing to talk about. Sadly – or perhaps fortunately – only Western countries can do good about it so far. See some real examples on how many – probably how much – multinational companies the US owns? How about the British ones? German ones? Italian ones? French ones? Spanish ones? Australian ones? Surprisingly, the last country is not even located in the West! Eventually, we are getting addicted to them, to their goods and services, as well as their money. It is one thing sad about being global but, do we have to dismiss and let all those prospectus chances for our people to learn go away? If you people think so, why do not we just isolate ourselves and get back to the stone age where neighbourhoods do not communicate each others, keep making fires using stones, and so on?

Another one that might be questioned is whether or not I am proud of being an Indonesian? The answer is YES, once again, the confident answer is YES! I am proud of being a part of this country – Indonesia –, being a part of an island named Bali, being a part of a small town called Denpasar, being a part of a small village named Ubung, and being a part of my ordinary family. What my statements trying to say are just to do a good comparison between our country and others; nothing more and nothing less. Moreover, I think it is normal for our governments to conduct study-tours (a.k.a study-banding) abroad so am I being too retarded to take any topic(s) about globalism?

The points of my motivating statements are just to compare and contrast what we and/or other countries are good or bad at. I think it is pretty clear English that compare means finding same things we both have and contrast carries a meaning of figuring out what we personally or partially do not have yet. As I ever quoted couple of times before – I have no idea whether it has been said by somebody else previously, please do a critical survey for me about this :) - but for me, life is about one's movement from darker to brighter side(s) which clearly clarifies that nothing must go backward in this life and if something does so (except humans' healths, it is GOD issue and I have no right to discuss about it), it means there is something inappropriate in it and a good back-up plan must be performed very soon! Back again, if there is a reason, please tell me why do we have to stay still or even return back back to a point we have lost? As I said, supposedly and/or confidently, we gotta be global and move on to a better perspective for sure.

Talking about globalism and moving to a better point will bring invention issue up to the surface. Invention is a never-ending worldwide topic and significantly it does not end up or it is not supposed to end up in the US and/or UK only. It can be or must be done in anywhere, in other words it is the world's responsibility. Living in Indonesia does not mean that you do not have to pay an extra attention to what is really happening internationally in the US, UK, Australia, or others. Same goes to the original topic of why I seem “westernized” whereby we always have to reflect, turn on pages of life, and learn according to what others have done for their better enhancements. If we have chance for not being blindfolded then why should we blindfold ourselves? It is no matter we are Indonesians, British, Americans, Australians, Singaporeans, Japanese, Indians, Malaysians, Germans, Canadians, or whoever. More and more inventions always need to be done and that is what I am trying to do right now and not just blinded-ly being a “westernized” kind of figure.

Last but not least, I still want to say in a very loud and clear way that I still love the country I belong – Indonesia – and I will do my best for its best. However, being open-minded, global, or “westernized” in terms of mine does not mean I have lost my nationalism, really does not. I hope you people understand what I am trying to say and I really wish you enjoy this post. Please do comment if you feel like and I will try to entertain you as soon as possible, this topic is wide open :)

After all, I am still an ordinary kid who has been dreaming of better Indonesia.
